This is an independent community website,
built for the benefit of the parishioners, visitors and people interested in the history of the parish or perhaps researching their family tree. The site has no connection with any organisation and is happy to support all businesses and organisations within the parish or in some cases, with parish connections. (ie Accommodation - as there are no hotels in the parish, I have used the nearest two.)
Coming events can be advertised free of charge, provided that they are to take place in the parish OR are to be held to raise funds for a parish based organisation.
WHY THIS SITE HAS BEEN CREATED?
If you have ever 'Googled' Cruwys Morchard, you, like me would have been disappointed in the number of sites that claim to have lots of information on our wonderful parish, but when you take a look, there is no local information at all. We are lucky that we have some space on Mid Devon District Council's web-site, thanks to the parish council, who don't use all of their allocated space, but there is a limit to the number of photographs that can go in and local businesses are not included. There is however information on the parish council and parish events. (Take a look! www.middevon.gov.uk/cruwysmorchard). So I decided to attend the local college once more and did a C.L.A.I.T Web Design course and decided to start building one myself, mainly because I lost my job and I needed a project to keep my mind active, so here we are. I hope that it will grow and be more interesting in time. If you have a coming event that you would like to advertise (free) please email me your poster/flyer or details as an attachment to cmparishwebsite@btinternet.com
About me.
Most parishioners know me well, but for those of you who don't, My name is Mary Elizabeth Davey, I was born in the parish, at Middleway Farm in 1956 and lived in Wayvillage and Pennymoor for 51 years, at Middleway, Eastway, 3 Moorview, 7 Moorview, and Villa Isabella. (Named after my Mum and Great Grandmother Isabella Hunt nee Radford).
I was Vice Chairman of the Parish Council for many years, Chairman for just one year, a Special Constable for 13 years, also committee member on the Women's Institute and was treasurer for the last few years. Sadly the membership plumetted to about ten, and with no interest following a leaflet drop, it was decided to call it a day, not long after a celebration of it's 75th Anniversay. It began in 1927. click on 75 Years of Womens Institute
I have been on the Management Committe of the parish hall for many years. My father was on the hall committee for several years and was Chairman for 11 years until his sudden death in 1997. I have also been on the new hall fundraising committee since it began in 1999. I am a regular at church and all three chapels. I ususally attend most parish events and help at most of them. I have worked at The Cruwys Arms, The Cadeleigh Arms. Pennymoor Timber and Pulsards, Bickleigh Mill, Greenvale Garage, 5 years at W H Smith, 2 years on a local newspaper and 17 years as a Personal Assistant/Company Administrator for a local plumbing and heating firm in Tiverton. I love to keep up with the times by learning new skills, and since my husband left in 1977, I have been a regular at the local college, mainly doing computer courses. At the age of 37, I took my first GCSE and passed c(1) in English Language, although my spelling is terrible. (This site does not have Spellchecker!)
I have quite a lot of memories and knowledge of a place that I hold very dear. I still spend a lot of time here, to see my family, clean the parish hall and run the monthly bingo and 200 Club to raise funds to help with running costs of the hall. In doing my family tree, I have traced back to 1600 in the parish, so Cruwys Morchard is well and truly in my blood. My family have lived at, East Cotton, West Cotton, Cotton Heath, Middleway, Westway, Stickeridge, Wortball, Eastway, Northway, Southway, Southeastway, Knapp, Windmill, Littleland (Lytheland), Northcote, Hookway, Norville, Villa Isabella, Coombe, Edbury, Fork(e), North Pennymoor, (address not listed on census), & Hill Farm. Some of my ancestors' names are:-
Arscott, Hunt, Radford, Tancock, Squire, Kingdon, Melhuish, Crook, Stoneman, Taylor, Grant, & Fisher, to name but a few.
If anyone has connections with any of those names,
I would like to thank those of you who have provided information or photographs for the site. If there is anything that you are unhappy with, please CONTACT US or if there is something that you feel should be included, or you have an old photograph that that could be used, (provided that you have the copyright), please do not hesitate to CONTACT US . To attach photographic/word files you will need to email as JPEG and Word attachments to cmparishwebsite@btinternet.com
