Cruwys Morchard Parish - A place of Beauty!

About Our Parish
Cruwys Morchard is probably the biggest parish (geographically) in Devon. Although population wise it has only 198 households and just over 400 on the electoral role, and an estimated population of 608 according to another website.
The name Cruwys Morchard is thought to mean 'Cross in the big wood', possibly the big wood belonging to the Cruwys Family or to do with the church. The Cruwys Family have resided at Cruwys Morchard House, (The Manor House), since the reign of King John, (1167-1216).
If your name is Cruwys, even if it is spelt differently, you may like to visit the Cruwys One Name Study site
http//www.one-name.org/profiles/cruwys.html. They are trying to research everyone with the surname who ever lived, wherever they lived in the world. I have already sold some pens to someone named Cruse in America.
There is no village of Cruwys Morchard which confuses some visitors to the area. The parish consists of three hamlets, Pennymoor, Way Village and half of Nomansland as the parish boundary is on the crossroads by the Mount Pleasant Inn.
As well as the Parish Church, the parish has three
chapels at
Wayvillage, Pennymoor and
Nomansland. All three are congregational. Nomansland and Wayvillage still have their pews but Pennymoor has removed them to give the building more flexibility. Coffee mornings are a regular event
. The chapel can be hired for meetings, jumble sales etc. The Gospel Hall at Waycorner is now a dwelling. The parish has three graveyards, which the parish council pay towards the upkeep. Wayvillage chapel has been struggling finacially in recent years. So they have been holding concerts, 'Way back When' (history) evenings and even a summer fete to boost their takings. It's future is very uncertain.

Near the church is the
parish hall, built around 1929 as The Mens' Club. It is sadly at the end of it's useful life, mainly due to it's worsening condition and the lack of cooking facilities. Fund-raising for a new, better equipped hall began in 1999. Just over £93 thousand has been raised to date. Planning permission to rebuild has been approved - a lovely start to 2012 - now we need to raise more money. For information on the New Hall Plans
